Lady Gaga Enters The Fray On 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Debate With Video Message

Lady Gaga's crusade against "don't ask, don't tell" continued Thursday with a video message urging her fans to call their Senators and voice their opposition to the exclusion of gays in the military.

"Will you support repealing this law on Tuesday, and pledge to them that no American's life is more valuable than another?" Lady Gaga asks in the black-and-white video staged in front of an American flag backdrop. She said the broadcast was mainly addressed to Republican Senators John McCain of Arizona, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, James Inhofe of Oklahoma and Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who have loudly opposed moves to reverse the military's anti-gay policy.

The openly bisexual pop star first made national waves when she appeared at MTV's 2010 Video Music Awards last weekend with a small guest cohort of gay soldiers who had been discharged under "don't ask, don't tell."

Days later, Lady Gaga sent out a tweet encouraging her followers to call Senate Majority Harry Reid to schedule a vote to repeal "don't ask, don't tell." The vote, however, had already been planned.

Reid responded with his own tweet informing Lady Gaga of the plan to take "don't ask, don't tell" to the Senate floor next week, and said that "Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so."

Lady Gaga's New York Senators, Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, have apparently responded to the celebrity's latest message. Sen. Gillibrand used Twitter Friday to ask the singer if she had time to "talk later today?"

Sen. McCain responded to Lady Gaga's calls for the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" during an interview with KFYI in Phoenix on Friday, saying, "I hope she'll continue to pay attention, and to watch the debates on the Senate floor, and understand that this is a pure political ploy on the part of [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid and Democrats who see their majority slipping away."
