Learning by Protesting at French Consulate?

After they presented their letter to Deputy Consul Henry, a reporter asked our Principal, Thabiti Brown, "Shouldn't students be in class?" He replied, in true Expeditionary Learning fashion: "This is class."

Codman Academy students have been all over the news with their protest at the French Consulate over the travel advisory to French tourists to avoid Boston's neighborhoods of color: Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan.

After they presented their letter to Deputy Consul Henry, a reporter asked our Principal, Thabiti Brown, "Shouldn't students be in class?"

He replied, in true Expeditionary Learning fashion: "This is class."

These are important lessons too and one reason we embed fieldwork into our curriculum. Leaders are made, not born and we believe school's have a special responsibility to develop leadership in students by supporting them in the active pursuit of addressing injustice. Besides, this particular snub from the French government hit home.
