State Sen. Lee Zeldin (R) defeated Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) in New York's 1st congressional district on Tuesday.

Bishop has represented his Long Island district since 2002, but the race was seen as a competitive one. Former president Bill Clinton traveled to the district to campaign for Bishop last month.
