Maria Shriver has interviewed everybody from Fidel Castro to Cher, but it was Lena Dunham who threw the seasoned journalist off her game during an uncomfortable exchange on the “Today” show Friday morning.
Dunham visited the studio to promote the final season of “Girls,” which premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO, and in typical fashion ended up talking about body parts. That’s when the interview completely derailed, leaving a stunned Shriver at a loss for words.
“You saw a penis, right?” Dunham asked, kicking things off quite nicely.
“Well, I saw more than that,” a clearly surprised Shriver responded. “You caught me there for a second. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to say that on television.”
“I won’t be coming back!” Dunham joked. “Going out with a bang!”
The camera quickly cut to host Matt Lauer, who was waiting in the wings, as Shirver jokingly cried for help to assist with the interview. Then, Dunham, who apparently thought the interview was over, stood up from her chair to leave, leading Shriver to remind her that she was still on the air.
“I’m thrilled by what’s just happened here,” Dunham added.
Us, too, Lena. Us too.
