Lesbian Discount Gets Boing Boing Maternity Store Owner Harassed

Maternity Store's Lesbian Discount Provokes Ire

A store owner's decision to offer a price break to lesbians prompted vitriolic, threatening complaints from critics.

It all started when Brokelyn posted a piece on Boing Boing maternity store's 10 percent discount for lesbians.

Karen Paperno, who sells all manner of nursing and baby gadgetry at her shop, has been offering the deal for about a month. She says she has about one taker a day. She also fields occasional complaints.

“The lesbians love it and the gay males get upset,” she says. “But their disposable income is so much higher than women’s. Men just make more than women.”

The post drew the ire of one commenter who wrote, "This is blatantly discriminatory and wish godspeed to whomever sues these sexists over it."

Then Paperno received several harassing phone calls. Paperno said she's now afraid to be alone in the store at night, though the calls have not changed her mind about offering the discount.
