A Texas couple claims their son was turned away from a local Montessori school because they are lesbians.
Tracy Keller and her wife Dawn told WFAA that they'd hoped to enroll their 3-year-old son, Landry, at the New Beginnings Montessori School in Bedford, Texas. After they toured the school, however, the two moms say they were told by New Beginnings Director Shamain Webster that it wasn't an option because they were lesbians.
Dawn quoted Webster as saying, 'We are not going be able to enroll Landry in our school because it’s against my religion, and we don’t live that way."'
Interestingly, Webster confirmed to the news station that she'd initially rejected the couple's inquiry, but the school's owner, who is her father, "would like to allow them to submit an application."
But for the couple, it's too little, too late. "We just want some place that’ll welcome us just like everybody else," Dawn said.
The case echoes that of Tracy and Jill Harrison, a Texas lesbian couple whose 4-year-old daughter, Olivia, was reportedly denied admission to St. Vincent's Cathedral School because they are gay in 2010.
The school's dean confirmed the news in a email statement cited by CNN, arguing that the couple's relationship went against the "clear teaching of the Christian faith" and that the school was standing on its principles "in matters of marriage and sex outside of marriage."
