It’s a fact that through the body of a woman human life springs forth. Women carry and incubate life. Women are the hand that rocks the cradle sustaining life, yet 1 in 3 women will be abused or killed by a domestic partner. Why is it that a woman, the appointed life-bearer for humanity, has to fight men to live? According to The Center For American Progress, “Violence against women looks very different than violence against men. Whether in the context of sexual assault on college campuses or in the military, violence by an intimate partner, or other types of violent victimization, women’s experiences of violence in this country are unique from those of men. One key difference in the violence committed against women in the United States is who commits it: women are much more likely to be victimized by people they know, while men are more likely to be victims of violent crime at the hands of strangers.”

In America, a woman who is abused by her husband can fire a ‘warning shot’ into a wall —not kill anyone, claim self-defense and still be sentenced to 20 years in jail for a victimless crime.

In America, a young girl can be raped by her father repeatedly, and the father is sentenced to only 60 days in jail.

In America, a young woman can be gang raped by a group of boys, and her peers standby and watch. The bystanders placing so low a value on a woman’s life that no one thinks to intervene.

In America, young women are sold as sex slaves on a massive scale. According to a CNN report, sex trafficking is the new American slavery.

In America, the rape culture is alive and well.

In America, women are sexually assaulted by police officers. The people who are trained to protect them. In an article, Why Cops Get Away With Rape, Jennifer Marsh, VP of Victims Services at the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, states “Officers tend to choose victims who would lack so-called credibility in the eyes of other law enforcement…they use that justification for why that person cannot be believed.”

In America, violence against women is increasing at an alarming rate. Just this week, a woman was murdered for turning down a marriage proposal.

Are we a nation where spoiled men kill women, because they can not have their way with them?

In America, women with low moral standards are put on pedestals in social media and on television. The degradation of women has become so prevalent that women are willingly embracing negative, oversexualizing stereotypes for material gain. There’s now even a subculture of women who aspire to sexually exploit themselves for television, and we support this type of oppression by giving these type of shows ratings! This is sick.

We’ve become a nation that makes a mockery of young women for wanting to be virgins, while we simultaneously undermine the sexual trauma of women whose vaginas have been violated.

We’ve become a country that scoffs at the idea of abstaining from sex until after marriage.

We’ve become a nation that puts whores and strippers on reality television for all the world to see.

We’ve become a nation that supports the exploitation of female, childhood innocence and beauty with shows like Honey Boo Boo and Toddlers and Tiaras.

What happened to dignity in America? What has America become?

Is it a place where women are seen as merely sex objects, and not as the sacred life-bearers that they are?

Has our society become so spiritually and socially numb, that we no longer understand what it means to practice compassion? Are we more interested in power, capitalism and control than in valuing proper human interaction? Have we altogether forgotten that it was a woman who brought us into this world?

Hopefully, we haven’t. I truly believe that you can discern a nation’s spiritual and social integrity on the basis of how it treats women. Women in America are weeping and need to be vindicated. Let’s make America great by respecting and not supporting ideological constructs and attitudes that demean women. Let’s start making America great by honoring the hand that rocks the cradle.
