A Letter to Santa

I will take care of the presents under the tree but when you pop down our chimney on Christmas Eve if you could place in our stockings a certain santa-je-ne-sais-quoi that fills each of us with the desire and ability to be our kindest, best, most generous selves every day that would be the greatest gift of all.

Dear Santa,

Let me start out by saying that I have been a big fan of yours for as long as I can remember. It would be impossible not to love a man whose sole reason for existing is to spread tidings of comfort and joy along with a sense of magic and peace. I would also like to belatedly thank you for not putting coal in my stockings all those years when, according to my parents, former lovers, friends and my children, I might have deserved it.

I know that bag of yours has an immeasurable capacity and in it you carry all sorts of other magic that does not come in the form of toys. I'm probably not alone in turning you into a blend of a UPS carrier in a red suit who delivers presents and some sort of religious figure who can absolve us of our sins and call us to higher levels of our own best selves. People of all different religions now look to you Santa. You are no longer just a Christian icon. You're more than that -- you represent hope and generosity of spirt and you remind us about the pure simplicity of joy.

This year would you please sprinkle fairy dust over my children so that when they wake up on Christmas morning they will appreciate that it is the random acts of kindness, those simple gifts that that are not material that they give to others, that matter the most in this world and not the Ugg slippers or the new tires for their car?

Santa Claus, when they wake up on Christmas morning and every morning, can you please somehow instill in them the desire to give freely of themselves? That they will not begrudgingly help shovel out our elderly neighbor's driveway after a heavy snow, but will take the initiative to do it because it feels good to do good and help someone who is in need of assistance or extra care. Would you please help them keep in their mind that just smiling at somebody could turn their day around? While you're at it could you give them better access to the tiny voice that lives inside of each of them, each of us, reminding us of the golden rule and then shore up their desire to live by that daily. Daily Santa, I mean it. Not just once a year. OK fine, I need it too. We all do. Is there room in your sack for some of that for everybody? I know others have already asked for world peace and basic medical care and nutrition for everyone so I won't add that to my list. I know you are working on it and everyone knows you are much more effective than our legislature, but I digress.

Thank you Santa Claus. I will take care of the presents under the tree but when you pop down our chimney on Christmas Eve if you could place in our stockings a certain santa-je-ne-sais-quoi that fills each of us with the desire and ability to be our kindest, best, most generous selves every day that would be the greatest gift of all. If there is room at the top of the stocking for a bit of humor for each of us that would also be most appreciated. Humor is a great way to fight the cold.

Regards to Mrs. Claus and the reindeer. You know I have always had soft spots for Dasher and Vixen -- they do add such flair to the team.

Your pal,
Sukey
