The only thing better than a handmade card is a handmade card that also supports a good cause.
Last May, 3-year-old Aubrey Castro was diagnosed with leukemia, according to ABC News. Since then, she's been painting and coloring her way through chemotherapy.
Now, she's using her artistic creativity to help kids like her who are battling cancer.
After Aubrey's family found out that the government only allocates 3.8 percent of funding to pediatric cancer research, they decided to take initiative and raise money themselves by making and selling Mother's Day cards, ABC News reported.
"When Aubrey grows up she says she wants to be a mommy and an artist," a friend of the family wrote on Etsy. "She has created a greeting card that you can purchase and share with that special woman in your life that you want to honor on this holiday."
They've sold about 1,500 cards so far and hope to sell 2,014 by Mother's Day.
If they don't reach their goal, they plan to continue selling the cards throughout the year for $5 on both St. Baldrick's Foundation's website and a friend's Etsy store.
“Even when she was at home and on steroids, she had an easel, it was painting and coloring … that’s how the cards evolved,” Vanessa Castro, Aubrey's mom told ABC News.
Aubrey is still undergoing chemotherapy, but hopes to be finished by July 2015. In the meantime, her mom plans on supporting her daughter at St. Baldrick's "Mommas Shave for the Brave" this summer in Boston where she and 45 other moms will shave their heads, according to their Facebook page.
Vanessa deserves more than one card this Mother's Day!
