LGBT History Month Icon Of The Day: Cleve Jones

Cleve Jones was in his early 20's when he first met Harvey Milk. His life soon changed as he began interning for the famous LGBT rights pioneer and launched his own career working on behalf of the LGBT community.

Aside from his work with Milk, Jones, who turns 58 today, has been instrumental in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS. In the 1982 he co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and conceived of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, a powerful visual tribute to those lost to the disease, in 1987.

More recently Jones has been busy with Sleep With The Right People, "a collaboration between UNITE HERE and the LGBT community working jointly to use our power as consumers to ensure that hotels respect their workers" and was named a White House Champion of Change earlier this year.

Each day in October, which is LGBT History Month, we'll be featuring a different LGBT icon. Check back tomorrow for a look at another incredible individual who changed history and visit our LGBT History Month Big News Page for more stories.
