LGBT Voters Critical To President Obama's 2012 Victory

New Poll Suggests LGBT Voters Were Critical To 2012 Election Results

According to the Human Rights Campaign, results of a new poll suggest that 45.7 percent of the President’s total popular vote margin came from LGB voters as 76 percent of all LGBT votes went for the President.

According to the poll, marriage equality was a major factor in many members of the LGBT community turning out to vote for the President.

Whereas 8 years ago, during the 2004 election, LGBT issues and same-sex marriage were used as conservative tools to bring out voters, the trend has now turned with more voters in support of LGBT issues. Since, four states have passed same-sex marriage laws, or turned down laws prohibiting same-sex marriage, according to the HRC.

Overall, the 2012 elections were historic for the LGBT community in many ways.

The LGBT community had other major wins this election season, including same-sex marriage victories in Maryland, Maine and Washington, the election of the first openly gay senator, and the election of Washington's openly gay Senate majority leader.

As the the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, HRC commissioned the survey to 1,001 voters who voted in the 2012 election. The poll was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research between November 5th and 7th.
