Bisexuals Stand Out in the LGBT Community
Bisexuals have been in every kind of news of late, whether its a new UK study that found bisexual women to be more depressed than lesbians, a bisexual Catwoman or the new Governor of Oregon, Kate Brown. Luckily, Bisexual Health Awareness Month (#BHAM) kicks off this week to draw attention to the individual health challenges that bisexual people experience with a particular focus this year on mental health. Just in time and not a moment too late, thank you Bisexual Resource Center!

LGBT Healthcare Bill of Rights
We’re continuing to see our LGBT Healthcare Bill of Rights spread across our communities. Equality Florida recently hosted a web forum about the HBOR and open enrollment where over a thousand people showed up to hear the news. This week we saw Ft. Lauderdale’s paper carry a story about HBOR protections too. Good, keep spreading the information.

CDC Reports 9 of 10 New HIV Infections Arise From Untreated HIV

In a first of its kind analysis, CDC released a video this week showing 90% of new HIV infections result from HIV positive people who are not in care. This gives rise to serious questions about how many new infections we could prevent by getting more people into care. On the same topic, GLAAD launched a challenge to Hollywood to show more HIV+ characters.

Feds Extend Two New Major Protections To LGBT persons

This week the Labor Department extended Family Medical Leave Act coverage to the “celebration” policy for same-sex couples. This means that same-sex couples can access FMLA benefits even if they’ve moved to a state that does not recognize the marriage. In a second policy win, we’re happy to see HUD issued new rules for homeless shelters that allow a trans person to shelter with their preferred gender, regardless of their documentation.

Report Finds Link Between LGBT Rights And Quality of Life

A new report found that quality of life was higher for LGBT residents in states that had LGBT protections versus those that did not, with LGBT parents facing the biggest disparity. Meanwhile European advocates have released a new video decrying quality of life nightmares for trans people and a blogger in the U.S. calls for a new Institute for LGBT Resiliency.
