Lisa Marie Presley Serves Fish and Chips In English Village

Lisa Marie Presley Trades Memphis BBQ For British Fish and Chips

Lisa Marie Presley may be a "chip" off the old block but even the King might be all shook up to find out about his only daughter's secret new job -- bagging fish and chips out of the back of a van in the quiet little English village where she lives.

Yet the daughter of Elvis Presley took to the grease like a local recently when she volunteered to work the "Mr. Chippy" van owned by her friends Kim and Justin Scales. They also own the King's Arms, the local pub in the southeast England village of Rotherfield where Presley and her husband regularly lift a Guinness and even play darts with the local gentry.

It's a long way from Graceland, the Memphis mansion where Presley grew up amid royalty of the rock-and-roll variety. She and her mother Priscilla recently made a surprise visit back there for a candlelight vigil marking the 35th anniversary of Elvis' death.

Presley flew in from England, where she and guitarist husband Michael Lockwood and three of their four children have lived for the last two years. Fleeing the paparazzi in Los Angeles, they bought a $13 million mansion on 90 acres in Rotherfield in 2010. They live with three of their four children in the estate house not far from the former home of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Despite the proximity, Presley has reportedly quit the controversial church that she once credited with helping her kick drug addiction.

Working at a "chippy," -- The Sun called her the "The Queen of Rock and Sole" -- is just the latest evidence that English country life suits the tabloid-chased singer. She has enthusiastically joined in community activities, including taking part in a fun run to raise money for a local children's hospice. She also donated a photo of her father that fetched more than $11,000 at an auction to raise money for a charity that grants wishes for children with life-threatening diseases.

"I lived in the same neighborhood for 17 years and I didn't even know a neighbor," she told BBC Radio 2 this week. Her English neighbors are far nicer, she said, than "self-absorbed" Californians.

"When I moved here I was getting notes and flowers. That's what I love about it. It's simple, it's not flash, it was a quality of life I needed, said Presley, 44.

Not that Presley will be slinging fish and chips full-time. As her friend Kim Scales cracked to the Daily Mail: "No way! She got the fish all upside down and was totally cack-handed."

But Scales, who runs the pub where Presley likes to hang out, said she doesn't come "all glammed up" and mingles with the locals at the bar.

"She likes to see how we live and experience it," she told the Kent & Sussex Courier. "We were laughing because the customers didn't know it was her. She really enjoyed it."
