Lizards Found In German Man's Suitcase Were 'Personal Food Supply,' He Claims

Man Says Lizards In Suitcase Were For Dinner

A man caught with 49 live lizards in his luggage at Munich Airport in Germany claimed they were for his dinner.

The 28-year-old German traveler, who had just returned from Oman in the Middle East when the lizards were found, offered to bite the head off one as proof they were his "personal food supply."

The creatures -- 31 spiny-tailed lizards and 18 geckos -- are now under the care of veterinarians in Munich.

UPI spoke with a customs spokesperson, who expressed doubt that the man was actually planning to eat them.

"He was going to eat the lizard right there," the spokesman said. "But they are worth several hundred euros each on the black market, so he might have wanted to sell them."

The man will likely be charged at least 1,000 euros for transporting protected animals.
