Grandfather Shoots Son, Grandson Fires Back: Police

A family dispute turned deadly on Monday, when an elderly man opened fire on his son, only to be fatally shot by his grandson, police say.

The incident took place at a mobile home in Kittrell, North Carolina, where deputies say they discovered the two wounded family members, the Henderson Dispatch reports.

Peyton Woodlief, 49, had been shot with a 22-caliber pistol, CNN reports. His father, 84-year-old Lloyd Woodlief, who owned the home, had suffered one fatal wound from a 12-gauge shotgun.

Authorities determined in their initial investigation that the elder Woodlief first attacked his son, only to be retaliated on moments later by his 11-year-old grandson, according to reports.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Peyton Woodlief was receiving treatment at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

Charges are pending, according to WRAL. The family has declined to comment.
