This Couple's 81-Year Love Story Teaches Us What 'I Do' Really Means

Love that lasts a lifetime is hard to come by. That's why we're thankful for Bertie and Bill Nickerson, who -- after 78 years of wedded bliss -- remind us that true love is not only possible, it's a beautiful thing.

The Nova Scotia couple met in 1932 when Bill was 18 and Bertie was 15. Ninety-nine-year-old Bill recently told Canada's CBC News that it was love at first sight.

"She came down these stairs. I said it's heaven. She must have come from heaven," he said.

After dating for three years, during which Bill frequently walked the five kilometer trek to Bertie's house, the couple wed on December 2, 1935. Since then, they have raised two boys and still live in the home Bill built back in 1950.

So what's their secret? Get your tissues ready:

"It's just that she's she. I love her," he said. "I wouldn't trade a minute with anyone else. She's my wife."

To which Bertie replied, "You've got to stay around. You remember that, boy. Don't you go and leave me."
