Longmont Father Dropped Off Dog At Shelter, Then Shot And Killed 3-Year-Old Daughter, Himself

UPDATE: Dad Dropped Off Dog Before Killing Daughter, Self

Longmont Police suspect 38-year-old David Heydenburg shot and killed his 3-year-old daughter and then shot himself to death over the weekend.

UPDATE:

The Longmont Times Call reports Heydenburg left his dog, a chocolate lab, at an animal shelter earlier on Friday, then returned to his home at 1260 Red Mountain Drive. Police were concerned that the dog, which was not found in the house when officials found the bodies, had also been killed.

EARLIER:

According to Fox31, the 3-year-old girl was dropped off at the father's house on Friday afternoon. Heydenburg had custody of his daughter for the weekend.

The girl and the father were found dead in the master bedroom by local police, CBSDenver reports, after the man’s wife and son had stopped by to pick up the daughter on Sunday, but got no answer at the door.

At first, the mother and teenage son thought the power was simply out and called the police when they became increasingly worried about the pair inside, according to the Longmont Times Call. The man’s wife told investigators that she had moved out of the house in June and he had been making “weird” entries on Facebook recently.

A suicide note was found in the home, but police are not releasing the details what it contained, 7News reports. The 3-year-old’s mother and father had only been separated for approximately three months and this weekend visit was part of his scheduled custody arrangements.

9News reports that mother told the police that her husband had been suicidal earlier in the year but police said that there was no history of authorities being called to the home for any prior reason.
