WASHINGTON -- The educational aide and cheerleading coach who gave birth to the child fathered by a teenage student will be placed on a sex offender list for the next 10 years.
As the Examiner reports, Bowie, Md., resident Loni Haggins, 30, will also be on probation for the next year and must complete 100 hours of community service. D.C. Superior Court Judge Russell Canan suspended a one-year prison sentence.
In October, Haggins pleaded guilty to charges of attempted second-degree sexual abuse of a secondary education student at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in the District of Columbia.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office:
During the summer of 2010, Haggins worked as a supervisor for the District of Columbia Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. The victim, one of the students participating in the program, was supervised by Haggins. In August 2010, shortly after the youth program ended, Haggins began engaging in sexual acts with the victim, and continued to do so on a regular basis through April 2011. The victim was 17. Haggins attended the victim’s high school basketball games, picked him up from school, took him out to dinner, and routinely bought him shoes, clothes and other items, as she continued to engage in sexual activity with him.
Haggins advised the victim that they should keep their relationship a secret until after he turned 18. During that time, Haggins became pregnant twice and informed the victim that he was the biological father. The second pregnancy culminated in Haggins giving birth to a child. Paternity testing established that the victim was the biological father of that child.
Haggins was arrested on Sept. 14, 2012.
The boy even brought Haggins home to meet his family at Thanksgiving dinner, police documents said.
Wilson Senior High School, located in the Tenleytown neighborhood, attracts public students city wide and serves as the primary public high school for D.C.'s Upper Northwest neighborhoods.
