Los Angeles Animal Rescue Of The Week: The Sam Simon Foundation

In 2002, Sam Simon, co-creator of The Simpsons, established The Sam Simon Foundation in order to give back to the community and channel his love of dogs. The Malibu-based foundation aims to "save the lives of dogs to enrich the lives of people," and is entirely funded by Simon himself.

The foundation has both rescue dogs that are available to the general public, as well as assistance dogs. Its flagship rescue program rescues dogs from LA County kill shelters and trains them to be certified assistance dogs for Deaf and Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. While in training, dogs also take part in visitation programs at retirement homes and Alzheimer's wards.

Additionally, the foundation is also one of the largest providers of free spay/neuter in Los Angeles. One day a week, its mobile clinic will perform surgery on animals in need for owners with proof of low income. The foundation thus aims to help not only neglected animals but also people who are in need of assistance, either due to a handicap or to financial hardship.
