One of my favorite things about living in Los Angeles is being surrounded by a creative culture bursting with artists and entrepreneurs, little did I know this extended to all ages. Zayda- an 11-year-old from Claremont, California- has transformed her love for reading into a small business. I remember reading as a child for hours on end, completely lost in a new world. It’s a magic that’s harder to find now with looming deadlines and digital addictions. Meeting Zayda reminded me of that joy.

Zayda’s love for books seeps through her hand-made products at Shop Biblio Love, A Little Bookish Shop. Shop Biblio Love sells California-comfy-chic printed tees and other printed products designed and created by Zayda. I asked Zayda about her inspiration for Shop Biblio Love and the products she’s designed in a short interview below. For all my fellow book lovers and creators, this is a holiday pop-up shop you can’t miss!

1. What inspired you to create a Shop Biblio Love?

Shop Biblio Love combines all the things I love the most; books, art, and fashion! It is my creative outlet that I get to share with the world. I wanted to create bookish things that people can enjoy everyday. I don’t know many kids my age that love reading and kids who do love to read are made fun of or bullied. My ultimate goal is to make reading stylish and cool. And to help other bookworms express their love for books. The shirts are also a great conversation starters and have helped connect me to other bookworms. Books can change a child’s life! My dream is to become successful and be able to give back. I hope to one day provide books for children who cannot afford them.

2. What will you be selling at your pop-up shop on Sunday?

I will be selling shirts, sweaters, tote bags, posters, art prints, pillows, book sleeves and more!

3. What is your favorite thing you’re selling at Shop Biblio Love?

I have been taking sewing classes and I recently learned how to make book sleeves! I made cute fabric sleeves that protect your books when reading on the go.

4. I heard that you often finish an entire book in a single day! Why do you love books and reading so much?

Books bring me so much joy! Just thinking about books makes me smile. Whenever I am feeling sad, angry, or frustrated- I read a book. I can change my mood by grabbing a familiar story that I know and love so well. Books transport me to other worlds where magic lives and anything is possible. I go on the greatest adventures with wonderful characters who inspire me.

5. You are only 11 years old; many people think that’s really young to be starting your own small business. What is your advice for other young people looking to be creators?

Hmm…I don’t think age really matters as long as your passionate, dedicated, and are willing to work hard. I’ve always wanted to have my own business. I started with a lemonade stand when I was 3. Later on, I sold my drawings and paintings for 25 cents each when I was 5 years old. I have never thought of myself as being too young to do anything! As long as you are committed to an idea and you believe in it, you can bring it to life! I also have extremely supportive family and friends. Surrounding yourself with good energy is so important.

If you’re a book lover, or looking for gifts for someone special who enjoys reading- make sure to head to Zayda’s Pop-Up Shop in Claremont, CA December 10 from 1:00- 5:00 PM.
