There's subtle humor beneath "Fox & Friends" inviting actor Lou Ferrigno, television's "Incredible Hulk," to comment on the saga of Edward Snowden.
But it isn't that Fox tried to draw a parallel between Ferrigno's conflicted superhero, the Hulk (who is ostensibly a good guy, albeit an extremely violent one), and the NSA whistleblower (who claims his actions were in the public interest but that officials maintain were a breach of security) -- that's equal parts far-fetched and silly.
The humor is that Fox didn't trust its audience to get its own dumb joke, and beat all subtlety out of it. (FOX SMASH!)
It's also darkly funny that co-host Gretchen Carlson directed a question about Snowden to the Hulk instead of to Ferrigno. By his telling grimace, that nuance was not lost on the actor, who played the Incredible Hulk in the CBS television series from 1977 to 1982.
“I would say it’s a flipped coin. … I think leaking information was wrong. I think -- talking about the situation -- I think he did commit a crime,” Ferrigno said of Snowden's controversial actions.
Judging by his response, Ferrigno appears to have missed the subtleties of flipped coins. They tend to land on one side or another. But given the split of opinions among conservatives over Snowden's actions -- Glenn Beck loves him, but Speaker of the House John Boehner called him a "traitor" -- perhaps Ferrigno's metaphor is more apt than it seems.
