'Love Language' Dilemmas: Dr. Gary Chapman's Relationship-Building Advice (VIDEO)

WATCH: Do You And Your Partner Speak The Same 'Love Language'?

Marriage and family life expert Dr. Gary Chapman is best known for his bestselling 5 Love Languages book series, in which he identified five "languages" by which love is expressed: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time or Physical Touch. According to Dr. Chapman, each of us has a specific love-language preference -- and knowing which love languages you and your partner speak can help your relationship.

But what if you and your partner's "love language" styles clash? What are the hardest combinations to overcome? In this clip from "Oprah's Lifeclass," Dr. Chapman and Oprah talk about how to reconcile those differences.

"If a couple marries and they both have the same love language," says Dr. Chapman, "it might be much easier for them. Or if their first [language] is your secondary [one], it's still going to be pretty easy. But if their number one is your number five, that's where it's going to be a... stiff learning curve. But the good news is, all of these [love languages] can be learned. Even if you didn't receive them in childhood, you can learn them in adulthood if you understand why it's important to speak that language."
