Lovely Warren, the first female mayor of Rochester, N.Y., said Thursday that for many of her constituents, making ends meet in a still struggling economy is a daunting task.
“For many people that live in our most challenged neighborhoods, unemployment is greater than that –- than it was during the Great Depression,” Warren told HuffPost Live on Thursday. “My vision is to make sure that I’m working with the president of our local community college to put forth programs that will actually train people for a job.”
Warren said the Rochester City Council, over which she previously presided as president, had been cooperative in working with her agenda.
“We know what we need to do on behalf of the residents of the city of Rochester,” Warren said. “And now it’s just time to do it.”
According to Rochester's 2013 fiscal profile, the city’s unemployment rate was 9.8 percent in November 2012 and has been between 9.4 and 11.9 percent since the beginning of 2009. Certain neighborhoods, however, have much higher rates of unemployment, according to data available on a interactive map produced for the city. Warren was sworn in as mayor on Jan. 1.
