A 62-year-old Chicago shop owner didn't need a gun to fend off armed robbers who hit his Logan Square store on Tuesday.
Luis Quizhpe, owner of Quizhpe's Gifts and Sports in the 2200 block of North Western Avenue, was shot in the leg while swinging a baseball bat at robbers who entered the store he's owned for the past 28 years around 5:30 p.m. that day, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
One of the alleged robbers -- Cornell Mack, 53 -- has been charged Thursday afternoon with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and discharge of a firearm in the incident, the Chicago Tribune reports. His bail was set at $750,000.
The two would-be robbers entered the store and one of them presented his gun and grabbed Quizhpe's brother-in-law, saying "Give me the money or you are dead," according to ABC Chicago.
The second gunman headed behind the counter, where they encountered Quizhpe, and opened fire while the shop owner proceeded to swing his bat, Fox Chicago reports. The brother-in-law threw a stool and a fire extinguisher at the robbers before they fled the scene. By the end of the dramatic confrontation, all captured in surveillance footage, one of the robbers and the shop owner were both wounded by gunfire.

From a hospital on Chicago's North Side on Wednesday, Quizhpe told the Tribune that he did not realize he had been shot in the leg when he began swinging his bat vigorously, striking the would-be robber in the head and upper body repeatedly.
"It was like the Fourth of July. Pow, pow, pow," he told the Tribune of the chaotic scene, during which at least 10 shots were fired. "God didn't permit me to go yet. There must be a reason, for all the shots that he fired."
The shop owner's son, Juan Quizhpe, described his father as "a brave and courageous man, and I thank God for a father like that," according to ABC. He and his family are reportedly well known in Chicago's Ecuadorian community.
The shop owner is recovering in good condition and the second gunman remains at large as of Thursday afternoon.
