Each Art Basel Miami Beach, there's one event that's so exclusive, so random, or so sensational it steals the show. Two years ago it was The Island, a mysterious site-specific installation of sculptures, skeletons, and music on a remote island off Miami Beach.
Last year, a woman stripped down and lived with pigs in a storefront while another artist chewed off her own arms.
This year, it's tough to pinpoint a standout spectacle. There'll be a giant gator floating in the bay, there are reptiles creeping up the Freedom Tower, and a single artist will perform spontaneous screams in crowded places.
Another contender is Luna Park, in which French art duo Kolkoz recreates the lunar landing site of Apollo 11 on the sandy beach. The artists will crate the sand with muscle oil, Benjamin Moreau of Kolkoz tells HuffPost Miami. Some of the 300 craters will be as big as 40 feet wide.
But their work will be fleeting, as Luna Park will be destroyed each day by galleriests, critics, and artists using it as a soccer field.
The daily destruction of their work alludes to issues of pollution and beach erosion, according to the artists. They are also playing with the notion of the "negative and the inversion of images through the ambivalence between the Moon and the Earth, dead planet and living planet," according to a release.
See Luna Park from December 5 to 9 (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) on the Beach between 21st and 22nd street (AKA Collins Park). There will be one soccer match a day from December 6 to 8 at 4 p.m.
