Luther Campbell: The First Amendment Doesn't Protect Donald Sterling From NBA Ban (VIDEO)

Why Sterling's Comments Go Beyond The First Amendment

Hip-hop legend and former leader of 2 Live Crew Luther Campbell has taken his share of heat for the things he's said, but he agrees that the First Amendment doesn't protect Donald Sterling from NBA sanctions following the Clippers owner's racist comments.

Cambell and 2 Live Crew bandmates Christopher Wongwon and Mark Ross were charged with obscenity in 1990 for using explicit sexual lyrics during a nightclub performance. The band was acquitted as First Amendment advocates watched closely.

When Campbell joined HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill on May 1 to weigh in on the Donald Sterling controversy, he acknowledged that "we live in a country where you have First Amendment rights, and he does actually have the right to say what he has to say," but the punishments handed down by the NBA are about the organization's own standards.

"For me, it doesn't fall into a First Amendment issue, it falls into much more. You're part of a group of other owners and you're part of a league, and if you violate the code of ethics, that doesn't fall under the First Amendment," Campbell said.

Campbell also weighed in on the Sterling controversy in a column for the Miami New Times.
