The final season of "Mad Men" will be split in two. Seven episodes will air in 2014, and the remaining seven will air in 2015. The Los Angeles Times was first to report the news.
"We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience,” Matthew Weiner, creator and executive producer of "Mad Men," said in a statement. “The writers, cast and other artists welcome this unique manner of ending this unique experience."
AMC followed a similar plan with "Breaking Bad" with much success. The Bryan Cranston-fronted meth drama recently had its biggest audience ever. "The Walking Dead" also airs split seasons in the fall and spring.
The first half of the final "Mad Men" season, currently being called "The Beginning," will air in the spring of 2014. "The End of an Era," will follow in spring of 2015.
"This approach has worked well for many programs across multiple networks, and, most recently for us with 'Breaking Bad,' which attracted nearly double the number of viewers to its second-half premiere than had watched any previous episode,” AMC President Charlie Collier said in a statement. "We are determined to bring 'Mad Men' a similar showcase."
The final season of "Mad Men" kicks off in 2014.
