It doesn’t take a big “Star Wars” fan to recognize the Force is not with the Death Star.
Here you have this colossal death machine that took years to create, and some snot-nosed kid ― who’s probably just worried about picking up power converters from Tosche Station ― comes along and blows it up.
It just doesn’t seem right.
For a while now, Luke Skywalker destroying the Death Star has been seen as one of the biggest plot holes in “Star Wars.”
How could this high-tech, futuristic weapon possibly be that vulnerable? But it’s not just the Death Star. The second Death Star and Starkiller Base also get destroyed.
(Hopefully the Empire has good insurance.)
So why does this happen?
“Rogue One” may finally reveal the answer.
From the trailers, we can gather that Mads Mikkelsen’s character, Galen Erso, is working on the Death Star against his will. It’s theorized that he may have intentionally sabotaged the design.
Since so many of the Empire’s death weapons blow up, The Huffington Post asked Mikkelsen if we should give his character credit for providing the Empire with faulty plans, which would explain things.
The actor said with a laugh, “I think we should credit my character for a few things. I mean, I created the problem [of the Death Star], but I’m also part of the problem-solving.”
With that, the most unforgivable “Star Wars” plot hole may finally be resolved. Mikkelsen’s character obviously sabotaged the design from the beginning.
Erso we think.
The plan to take down the Death Star isn’t Erso’s alone, though. Mikkelsen gives a hat tip to the other actors in the cast, “In this case ... ‘Rogue One,’ the wild bunch, need some credit as well. They started this mission.”
Mikkelsen continued chatting with HuffPost about “Rogue One,” gave his pick for the new James Bond and may have solved another “Star Wars” plot hole, too. We’re looking at you, Stormtroopers.
From “Casino Royale” to “Doctor Strange,” why do so many of your characters have messed up eyes?
I don’t know why. I think it’s because it’s cool ... but you’re right, it has been a tendency, and I could mention a few other ones.
Hopefully your eyes are OK in this movie because Darth Vader returns. What’s it like coming face to face with him?
I didn’t really come face to face with him. But I heard rumors that he was in the building, and you could feel his presence, but I never really met him.
We know you’re working on the Death Star from the trailers, but what else can you tell us about your character in “Rogue One”?
I am also a scientist and working very closely with Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) from an early age on. We’ve been working together on producing this mechanism that can potentially make the world a better place or potentially not, and obviously we have a difference of opinion down the line and our roles are separated.
One of the biggest plot holes in “Star Wars” is that Stormtroopers have such bad aim. We saw 20+ minutes of footage from “Rogue One,” and, again, their aim is terrible. Why do you think they’re so bad?
I’d say it’s got something to do with the helmets because the actual helmet is hard to see through. If they took off the helmets, it would be a difference.
Some people think Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) will turn out to be the mom of Rey (Daisy Ridley) from “Force Awakens.” What do you think?
There are a million theories, and this shows how powerful these films are. That’s just one theory among millions.
On another note, have you ever met Anthony Hopkins and talked about “Hannibal”? And would you ever be interested in reprising that role?
I’ve never met Anthony Hopkins. If I did meet him, I’m sure we’d talk about something different than Hannibal. He’s an icon in that part, played it to perfection, and our show was a completely different animal, so we’d probably discuss something completely different. We had a wonderful journey with a crazy show and a fantastic showrunner. If it does come back, I’d try my very best to be part of it.
Who’s your pick for the next James Bond?
It’s always very controversial to pick a new Bond. It’s almost like having a new president or a new king. Everybody has an opinion. I think there are a lot of fantastic actors out there, but I just worked with Chiwetel Ejiofor. I think he would be a great James Bond.
What was it like filming the torture scene in “Casino Royale”?
I loved doing “Casino Royale,” and the torture scene, of course, was a wonderful day for me, a difficult day for Daniel Craig, but I really enjoyed it.
What would be a tagline for “Rogue One”?
In your face.
Wow, really?
Yeah! It’s direct. It’s brutal, but it’s also very beautiful.
