New York's Famous Magnolia Bakery Coming To Chicago?

The beloved cupcakes at New York City's Magnolia Bakery have been adored by "Sex and the City" fans and locals alike for years. Soon, the long lines could be coming to Chicago.

Chicago magazine reports that Steven Abrams, Magnolia's owner, is negotiating a lease for a space on State Street in the Loop. The bakery could open in the spring.

Magnolia recently opened a bakery in Los Angeles, bringing six New York staffers with to "keep the culture and quality of the brand," The Feast reported over the summer. No word yet on whether the new spot would hire locals of bring more New Yorkers to Chicago.

Abrams also stressed to Chicago magazine that while cupcakes made the spot famous--that is not all they are about.

"I am in the bakery game," Abrams said. "That is one of the things we need to distinguish. I sell 60 products. Cupcakes is one of them."

Magnolia will have to compete with Chicago's other cupcake institutions, including Molly's Cupcakes, Sweet Mandy B's, Alliance Bakery, Swirlz and Sprinkles.
