Mail Organizing Tips To Help Jump Start Spring Cleaning (PHOTOS)

You need to tackle this before anything else.

As the weather starts to get warmer, you're probably ready to fully swing into spring cleaning, right? But before you can tackle the big tasks like cleaning out the refrigerator and flipping your mattress, there's one nagging project that needs tending to: organizing your mail.

If you're like us, bills, magazines and menus just have a way of piling up in different areas of our homes. And vetting through everything takes time... so it keeps getting put on the back burner. That's why we've come up with a quick checklist and mail organizing tips to help you get your papers in order so you get rid of the mess, but don't throw anything important out in the process.

Filing system:

You'll definitely need a spot to store all of your most important papers, so before you get to work, be sure to invest in a filing cabinet, accordion or if you're feeling crafty, a DIY system to help you.

Label everything:

Once you figure out what type of storage works best for your home, you'll want to label, label, label. You can use adhesive stickers that can be pasted on folders or Sharpies to color code the contents of each.

Divide and conquer:

Whether you do it by yourself or with a friend (we suggest a little help), slowly go through every pile, sorting them into categories. For example unpaid bills, magazines and coupons.

Recycle and donate:

Recycle all junk mail like credit card inquiries or menus you'll never use, making sure to shred any documents with confidential information. If you want to get rid of old magazines, see if your local library or doctor's office will want them.
