Americans for Job Security, a conservative, pro-trade, free market organization, is apparently sending out mailers declaring that a vote for Democrats will lead to the re-institution of "Jimmy Carter's policies."
A reader in Minnesota sends over the script of a mailer, which she received on Monday. It doesn't address Obama by name but blasts "liberal groups" for pursuing an energy policy that "will make America even more dependent on foreign oil."
"Without your vote, Jimmy Carter's policies will win, again!" the piece declares, before alleging that "Liberals Still Aren't Serious About Drilling."
The mailer uses a quote from the Sierra Club to suggest that the Democrats oppose cheap gas.
Every civilization has its blind spots -- ideas so profoundly embedded in the culture that they are rarely even debated, but so fundamentally flawed that they can steer a whole society onto the rocks... Our own folly is cheap fuel." -Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope
Officials with Americans for Job Security didn't return a request for clarification or comment. The totality of the script (the reader was unable to scan the document) is pasted below.
As always, if you receive any campaign items, whether it be mailers, robocalls or push polls, please contact the Huffington Post.
Front of the mailer:
"These efforts will cost money, a lot of money, and that is why Congress must enact the windfall profits tax without delay. It will be money well spent."
-President Jimmy Carter's Speech, July 15, 1979
Opposite side of mailing as follows:
Will my vote affect the cost of gas prices? YES!
How? If you don't vote, Earth Justice and other left wing environmental groups will have their way!Liberals Still Aren't Serious About Drilling
What does the Sierra Club think.......
"We're better off without cheap gas
Every civilization has its blind spots - ideas so profoundly embedded in the culture that they are rarely even debated, but so fundamentally flawed that they can steer a whole society onto the rocks... Our own folly is cheap fuel." -Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope
"In February 2008, the administration issued 487 leases in Alaska's Chukchi Sea, which holds an estimated 15 billion barrels of oil and 76 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity, and other groups used the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act to challenge and delay progress on all 487 leases. In a separate lawsuit, they challenged the entire national outer continental shelf (OCS) leasing program, seeking to block all future leases...
The Alaskan OCS contains 26 billion barrels of oil and 132 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Not one offshore lease has escaped litigation."
-Rep. John Shadegg, Op-Ed, Wall Street Journal, 9/17/08
The liberal groups' plans will make America even more dependent on foreign oil.
