Makayla McEvoy, Australian Girl, Survives Kangaroo Attack (VIDEO)

7-Year-Old Girl Survives Holiday Kangaroo Attack

A seven-year-old Australian girl is recovering after a kangaroo attack on New Year's Day left her with scratches and bruises across her face and back.

Makayla McEvoy was on vacation with her family at Wyangala Dam in New South Wales when the attack occurred. She was playing with a group of kangaroos when one of the animals charged her and attacked, according to Sky News.

McEvoy told Reuters she was "Very, very scared. I thought I was going to die. All I could see was gray, gray, gray." Her parents said they were expecting the worst when they got to their daughter, who was lying face down on the ground.

The girl's stepfather, Mitch McGovern, told the Central Western Daily that he kicked the kangaroo and was able to get it away from Makayla. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, and was released the same day.

In October, a woman in Western Australia was attacked by a kangaroo while she was walking her dogs. Although kangaroo attacks on humans are not very common, another Australian woman was also attacked in 2011. A 94-year-old reportedly "tried unsuccessfully to fight the kangaroo off with a broom," before police pepper-sprayed the animal and subdued it.

Earlier in the year, an 80-year-old man in Ohio was attacked by a 200-pound male kangaroo at an exotic animal farm.
