There are many reasons for Donald Trump’s electoral victory—some trivial, some not—but one of the most important is America’s Trumpist political culture.

For several decades, American political culture has glorified ignorance, incoherence, and vulgarity—the very qualities that Trump embodies. These are the same qualities that endeared him to his electorate, which admires his “telling it like it is” and acting like one of the boys.

Trumpism is the culture of Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh, Jay Leno, and Bill O’Reilly. It’s the culture of Dumb and Dumber and its many spinoffs. It’s the culture of sitcoms and, more recently, of social media.

Trumpism made Trump possible, perhaps even inevitable.

Stopping Trump means draining the swamp of Trumpism. You can do your part by:

· Speaking in complete sentences

· Acting with civility

· Reading books
