If the Swiss organization Männer.ch gets its way, children in the country could be shown pornography during sexual education classes, The Local reports.
According to the report, the group wants to change the law so "parents and trained professionals are not liable to prosecution if they make pornographic materials accessible to 16-year-olds with a clear educational objective and within a carefully selected and well-defined setting."
Markus Theunert, the group's 39-year-old leader, told newspaper NZZ am Sonntag (New Zurich Times/News on Sunday) the material is nothing the students haven't already seen in other settings.
“Today, an overwhelming majority of children have already seen pornographic movies over the Internet or on smartphones,” Theunert told NZZ, according to The Local.
While students would be allowed to opt out of the the showings, some Swiss politicians are expressing concern over the proposal.
“It’s good to talk but you don’t have to show images,” Luc Barthassat of the Christian Democratic People’s Party told the Swiss daily newspaper Le Matin.
Last year, one teacher Rio Rancho high school in Albuquerque, N.M. was criticized for giving a "sex survey" in class.
KOAT-TV reported the survey was intended to teach students about how sexually transmitted diseases spread, but that it went too far for some parents when it asked students to list the people they had recent kissed.
Rio Rancho public schools spokeswoman Kim Vesely told KOB-TV the teacher was put on leave following the incident and did not follow proper protocol in issuing the survey.
