Marc Anthony, Racism, Supremacists, Oh My!

In honor of the public outcry that resulted after Marc Anthony's singing of "God Bless America," it's time to set a few things clear for all of those disgruntled baseball fans out there. I know attention spans are short, especially racist ones, so I'm going to keep my bits of advice as brief as I can. 140 characters or less, to be exact.

  1. Where have you all been? Clearly on Twitter, but did you happen to gloss over the nationwide race debate sparked by the Zimmerman trial?

  • It is 2013. If you publish something that is overtly racist, people will classify you as a bigot. Don't be shocked. The truth hurts.
  • Marc Anthony was born in New York City. He is as American as American gets.
  • Marc Anthony was born to Puerto Rican parents, yes, but fun fact! Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917.
  • Puerto Rico is not Mexico, Mexico is not Argentina, and Chile is not just a spicy vegetable. Google Maps, please!
  • "Spic" is an inappropriate word. It triggers an automatic spitting reflex in many. Wear goggles if you insist on using it.
  • About 28 percent of baseball players are foreign born, many from Latin America. Think about that next time they're entertaining you.
  • Steven Tyler, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé have all botched the national anthem, while Marc Anthony can elicit goose bumps, if you listen.
  • Celine Dion sings the national anthem all the time, and she's Canadian. Where's all the anti-Canadian rage at?
  • Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance is ignorance. If it is the guiding principal that determines your decisions, ways of thought and/or tweets, then you might want to try looking for a better source of inspiration.
  • (I realize that last one was more than 140 characters. I apologize. If it bothers you, feel free to leave a hateful comment below that I won't bother reading. Or maybe this link will cheer you up?)

The next time you decide it's your place to denigrate an entire population, make faulty assumptions about people's backgrounds or assert your self-perceived supremacy, remember that you are exposing the emptiness of not just your thoughts, but of your human dignity.
