Let Mariah Carey Explain The Ways Her Reality Show Won’t Be Like The Kardashians'

If degrees were awarded for shade-throwing, Mariah Carey would have graduated summa cum laude from a top-tier institution only to be invited back as a guest lecturer the next semester.

Under her tutelage, students would learn that the best shade is also the most subtle (”I don’t know her”) and that magazine cover stories are the ideal place for throwing it. Carey’s profile in Complex’s August/September issue is then the perfect study tool in a career marked by many teachable moments.

Now that Carey and the Kardashian family are reality TV show bedfellows ― the singer’s upcoming series “Mariah’s World” will air on the same network as “Keeping up with the Kardashians” ― she felt the need to explain what her show won’t be like.

But it [her show] won’t be, according to Carey, a put-it-all-out-there show in the style of the Kardashian clan— who are, coincidentally, filming something in a private dining room 15 yards away.

“Some of us,” Carey says, casting a glance toward the room, “talk about other people and what they do and la la la. But I’m not that person.”

Of course, the interview was conducted at the Kardashians’ favorite eatery, Nobu, which we can only imagine experienced a severe temperature drop after she released the above gem.

Carey, who has always maintained a carefully constructed distance from the public, admits later in the interview that the exposure reality TV provides was a bit uncomfortable at first. She initially intended for the series to focus solely on her tour and delve into the lives of the singers and dancers on stage, but, as we all know, she can’t stay out of the spotlight for long.

“I’ve become more comfortable with it,” she said about the process of making reality TV. “In the beginning I was like, ‘Fine, we can document the tour, we can show what’s happening behind the scenes, with the singers, the dancers, the this, the that. You can see me when I’m on stage, I’ll talk — blah blah blah.’ But what I started to realize is that my best moments are off the cuff.”

Truer words have never been spoken. Class dismissed.
