On December 15, Profiles In History begins the "Icons of Hollywood" auction -- an event that has Hollywood history-buffs and cinephiles across the world getting into the holiday spirit.
A pair of Dorothy's iconic ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" and Marilyn Monroe's wedding band (given to her by Joe DiMaggio) are the top headliners of the event and we've got all the info.
First off -- those ruby slippers. A pre-auction estimate approximates that they're worth between $2 and $3 million. The pair on the auction block is one of several pairs of ruby slippers used in the making of 'The Wizard of Oz.' One pair is on view at National Museum of American History as part of a permanent collection called "Icons of American Culture." According to the Los Angeles Times, one of the other pairs is in private hands and an additional pair was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in 2005.
The shoes up for auction are marked "#7 Judy Garland" and are in near-mint condition.
Next at bat is the wedding band Joe DiMaggio gave Marilyn Monroe at their 1954 San Francisco wedding. The legendary couple were married less than one year -- they divorced two weeks after she stood above that infamous subway grate. The wedding band was auctioned at Christie's in 1999 and fetched nearly $800,000. The ring is now missing one baguette diamond, and the expected auction value is between $300,000 and $500,000.
