The next time you fancy a dip in the waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands, you may want to keep a look out for these guys.

Known as marine iguanas, these underwater reptiles are the only existing sea lizards known to man today. Equipped with short limbs and a long tail, the iguanas can dive depths of some 30 meters, and were reportedly referred to by renowned naturalist Charles Darwin as "imps of darkness."

But fear not! Despite their seemingly monstrous looks, the iguanas are real-life gentle giants. They prefer to feast on algae and plants rather than, well, you.
