Mario Lopez for president? The actor isn’t exactly discarding the possibility.
After comedian and late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien joked that the Mexican-American star could be the first Latino U.S. President during the 2013 White House Correspondents Dinner, the actor has now spoken exclusively about the comment and his interest in general politics with HuffPost Voces.
O’Brien hosted the anticipated evening in Washington D.C. back in April and during his stint poked fun at the increasing influence of Latinos in the United States:
“The demographics of this country have been rapidly changing over the past two decades, and I look forward to host this event 18 years from now. Then my opening line would be: ‘Buenas noches es un honor poder hablar en esta cena de los corresponsales de la Clasa Blanca. Sí, especialmente al presidente Mario Lopez. [Good night, it is an honor to be able to speak at this White House Correspondents Dinner. Yes, especially to the President Mario Lopez.]”
Lopez may not be the face of the nation yet but he is currently the image of Dove’s Mint & Dark. In the interview with HuffPost Voces concerning his new chocolate-filled role, the star hinted at a possible political career in the future.
“I remember [when] Conan O’Brien said that,” Lopez said after being reminded of the comedian’s remark. “I’m very flattered. In fact I like politics and I love staying true to my community and you never know maybe later on it would be something that I would wanna get into.”
And what would President Mario Lopez do first in his new role as POTUS?
“I would make tortillas national [laughs],” Lopez told HuffPo. “Tortillas would replace bread in every restaurant, that would be my first mission. I would make tortillas an option at restaurants.”
In the interview, the actor revealed his excitement as he awaits his second child with wife Courtney Mazza. Lopez also said that Latino culture is an important part of his home life.
“Well you know my parents are from Culiacán, Mexico so there’s history there I love the culture,” the star said. “I love the people [of Mexico], I love the food and it’s important that my daughter speaks the language with the rest of the family so everyone’s taking lessons to stay sharp.”
