LGBTQ Advocates Shred Mario Lopez Over Remarks On Transgender Youth

The "Saved By The Bell" star appeared on right-winger Candace Owens' podcast, where he also commented on the Me Too movement.

Mario Lopez angered LGBTQ advocates this week after comments he made about transgender children in a recent interview came to light.

In a June 23 appearance on 鈥The Candace Owens Show,鈥 the 鈥淪aved By The Bell鈥 star and 鈥淓xtra鈥 host was asked about the 鈥渨eird trend鈥 in Hollywood of celebrity parents allowing their children to 鈥減ick their gender.鈥

鈥淚鈥檝e had children say they were mermaids, I鈥檝e had children say they could fly,鈥 said Owens, a conservative conspiracy theorist and Fox News commentator. She then brought up Charlize Theron, whose 7-year-old child, Jackson, reportedly identifies as transgender. 鈥淚 am trying to understand this new Hollywood mentality where they just think their children now have the mental authority,鈥 she added.

Lopez responded by saying he was 鈥渢rying to understand it myself,鈥 adding that he didn鈥檛 want Owens to consider him a part of 鈥渢hat whole鈥 group of celebrities.

鈥淟ook, I鈥檓 never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids obviously and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can鈥檛 go wrong,鈥 the father of three said in the interview. 鈥淎t the same time, my God, if you鈥檙e 3 years old and you鈥檙e saying you鈥檙e feeling a certain way or you think you鈥檙e a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be ... I just think it鈥檚 dangerous as a parent to make this determination then.鈥

He continued, 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e a kid, you don鈥檛 know anything about sexuality yet. You鈥檙e just a kid.鈥

Lopez鈥檚 interview with Owens was more than a month ago, but his remarks began making social media rounds late Tuesday following a Yahoo Lifestyle write-up.

Among those to criticize the remarks was 鈥淨ueer Eye鈥 star Karamo Brown, who also pointed out that Lopez had conflated gender identity and sexuality.

LGBTQ rights organizations GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign and PFLAG felt similarly:

Later in the interview, Lopez also offered an eyebrow-raising assessment of recent of the Me Too movement鈥檚 鈥believe women鈥 message, noting, 鈥淧eople lie 鈥 and sometimes those people are women.鈥

鈥淕od forbid you have a son out there and a girl may have felt a certain way about a situation 鈥 dismissed, hurt, whatever 鈥 and is feeling vengeful,鈥 he told Owens, 鈥渁nd [she] just decides to tell a certain story that鈥檚 not even exactly true.鈥

The remarks on trans youth were particularly striking given that Lopez, a devout Catholic, has been an advocate for LGBTQ causes in the past.

In 2015, he served as the grand marshal for the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade. He also appeared at the GLAAD Media Awards in 2011 and 2012.

UPDATE July 31, 2 p.m.

鈥淭he comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were,鈥 Lopez said in an email sent to HuffPost through his representative. 鈥淚 have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself.

鈥淢oving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful,鈥 he added.
