In 2000, track and field athlete Marion Jones was a gold medal-winning Olympian with a promising future ahead of her. Then allegations surfaced that Jones had used performing-enhancing drugs, causing her reputation and her finances to crumble. After admitting in 2007 to injecting steroids and participating in a check-fraud scheme, Jones pleaded guilty in a court of law. She served six months in prison in 2008.
In this clip from a new episode of “Oprah: Where Are They Now?,” the disgraced runner looks back on her experiences and shares what happened when she told her children about her prison sentence.
In the clip, Jones says that although her three children -- who are now aged 9, 5 and 3 -- are not old enough to understand the situation fully, she has told the two oldest that she has been to prison. "There was a bit of shock factor immediately, and then they asked why,” Jones recalls. “I said, ‘I made a poor choice.’”
Jones also shares in the clip what she hopes her legacy will be, in spite of the scandal. “I hope one day, when people remember me, that at the end of my name, there’s a 'dot-dot-dot,'" she says. "Because the story continues. It doesn’t end when you make a mistake.”
