Just days after Alexi Giannoulias accused his opponent for Illinois Senate Mark Kirk of being "obsessed" with talking about Broadway Bank's problems, Kirk launched a new ad attacking--what else--Giannoulias' Broadway Bank problems.
The ad starts with a narrator asking "Remember Alexi Giannoulias in 2006?" and shows Giannoulias campaigning for state treasurer on his banking experience. Then, it goes into a series of news clips chronicling the bank's troubles--and continually mentions Giannoulias "downplaying" his role in the bank's troubled loans.
The video is more than 3 minutes long, and ends with "it's time for Alexi to answer."
"I take my share of responsibility for possibly concentrating too much in commercial real estate," Giannoulias told the Sun-Times' editorial board while discussing the bank in early March. "Obviously, it's easy to look back four or five years and say that, but I think in my role, that's part of what I should be doing. This is not something I'm shying away from. This is not something I'm hiding from. I'm here to answer as many questions as I possibly can."
The anti-Giannoulias ad comes after Kirk has been the subject of several negative ads by the Giannoulias campaign. The anti-Kirk ads question his "independence," his stance on health reform, flip-flopping on issues and his ties to corporate special interests.
