Mark-Paul Gosselaar created an internet firestorm this week when he said that beloved '90s sitcom "Saved By The Bell" was "not a great show." In an interview with TMZ, Gosselaar clarified his comments about the show that made him a star, and insisted they were "taken out of context" in the Yahoo interview.
Gosselaar told TMZ that he is "proud of that show," and noted that "everything I've ever done after the show has pointed to me having nothing but respect for it." Indeed, Gosselaar did a 2009 interview with Jimmy Fallon in character as Zack Morris and said that he'd participate in Fallon's "Saved By The Bell" reunion that Tiffani Thiessen ultimately nixed.
The current "Franklin & Bash" star also expanded on his remarks about "Saved By The Bell's" "hokey" writing, which he called "very much a piece of that time."
That's why people like it!" Gosselaar mused. "I wasn't saying it was a bad show, just that the writing reflected" the era in which it was made.
The writer of the Yahoo interview has responded to Gosselaar's assertion that his words were misrepresented, telling TMZ that "I stand by my story 100 percent" and that Gosselaar's "not a great show" statement was a direct quote that he has on tape.
