Oklahoma Congressman Markwayne Mullin made a family whole again by welcoming two twin girls into his home.
Ivy and Lynette, both 2, have been living apart since they were 3 months old, AP reports. According to the Oklahoman, the girls were born into “kind of a bad situation" and were left in the care of their great-aunt and great-grandmother, both distant relatives of Mullin's wife, Christie.
While the women opened their loving homes to the girls, neither was able to take on the responsibility of caring for both.
Christie Mullin approached her husband multiple times about adopting the girls and bringing them back together, but the father of three had his concerns.
"We were unsure about whether, at this time, we could handle the extra responsibility,” he told the Oklahoman.
But that all changed when he met the girls last Christmas and witnessed their incredible bond.
“They've got the sweetest disposition,” Mullin told the press on Wednesday. “If you talk to anybody, they say twins need to be together. The bond between them is just amazing. They can have a conversation with each other for hours and nobody else can understand it.”
According to the Hill, the adoption was officially approved last Wednesday. The congressman now has a beautiful family of 7, and the two girls have restored a bond that they had once lost.
“People say, ‘Man, you're going to be such a blessing to those girls,'” Mullin said at a town hall meeting last week. “And I'm going to tell you right now — if you're someone who's thinking about adoption — you're going to be blessed more by them than you will ever be a blessing to them."
