"We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else," President Obama said in his inaugural address, "because she is an American, she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own."
While Obama gave what has been seen largely as a civil-rights-themed address Monday afternoon, thousands marched down NW 54th Street in Liberty City for the Martin Luther King Day Parade.
It was a day of double celebration -- for the late civil rights leader and for the second inauguration of America's first black president.
Yet as one filmmaker recently documented, Liberty City residents are often caught in a cycle of violence and poverty while many employers won't even consider an applicant with a Liberty City address.
Still Monday was a day of hope.
"We're seeing a lot of realization of that dream, and it's still unfolding," Rev. Richard Dunn, who once was a City of Miami commissioner, told NBC6, referring to MLK's famous speech.
High school marching bands, United Teachers of Dade union members, and Carnival dancers strutted west from NW 12th to 32nd Avenue.
Politicians waved from atop fire engines as Miami Workers Center activists held up signs 'Housing for all!'
Trayvon Martin's mother Sabrina Fulton even made an appearance, telling CBS Miami, “There’s still hope. There’s still hope. We have to keep pushing forward that’s what’s important."
