A New York school bus driver is accused of drunken driving after crashing a bus carrying 35 students into a telephone pole on Monday.
New York State Police arrested 56-year-old Mary Coletti, of Cortlandt Manor, after the crash. Cortlandt Manor is a hamlet located in the Town of Cortlandt, in Westchester County.
Coletti was transporting students from the Lakeland School District to Walter Panas High School when she sideswiped a telephone pole at about 7:00 a.m. police said.
"Troopers determined that Coletti was operating the school bus in an intoxicated condition and a subsequent breath test determined her blood alcohol content to be 0.13%," New York State Police Major Robin Benziger said in a Tuesday morning press release.
According to Benziger, some students on the bus reported sustaining minor injuries from the crash.
Authorities charged Coletti with DWI under "Leandra's Law." The New York law, also referred to as the "Child Passenger Protection Act," makes a first offense DWI an automatic felony when a person 15 years old or younger is inside the vehicle.
Lakeland School District Superintendent George Stone issued a press release about the incident on Tuesday. In the release, Stone said "appropriate" action will be taken upon completion of an investigation into the crash.
"The Lakeland family will insist on accountability," Stone said.
Coletti, who was jailed in lieu of a $1000 bond, was ordered to appear in court on May 18.
