Maryland Gun Control Bill Passes Senate

Maryland Moves Tough New Gun Control Bill Forward

The Maryland Senate on Thursday passed a sweeping gun control bill that would give the state some of the country's strictest gun regulations.

The Baltimore Sun has details:

In a 28-19 vote, senators approved a plan to require a license to buy a handgun, limit magazines to 10 bullets and ban the sale of assault-style weapons. Maryland State Police would be empowered to audit gun dealers, and state rules limiting gun ownership for people with mental illnesses would be expanded. Other provisions increase the information sent to databases used for background checks.

The bill was debated for some 11 hours over two days and faced almost 60 amendments on Wednesday, reports the Capital Gazette.

The measure, supported by Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, now moves to the House of Delegates, which is scheduled to hold a hearing -- expected to draw big crowds -- on Friday.
