My eyelashes can sometimes be the bane of my existence.
Since childhood, they've been crinkly and always curling into my eyeballs, which meant by the time I realized what mascara was, I was all for it. But, sometimes after I use the jet black lifesaver, my lashes get bunched up even more -- this time in a gooey clump.
However, my life was changed a couple of weeks ago. As I was getting a makeover done by a very experienced makeup artist, she started to apply mascara to my eyelashes in a weird way. She probably saw my face, because she explained that since my lashes were so messed up (okay, she didn't put it in those exact words, but I would've been totally cool if she had), that it's better for me to swipe the mascara wand from the top down, not the bottom up.
Confused? Good thing I've got a good 'ol GIF to explain things.

Instead of grouping them together, the mascara wand spreads my lashes out and by the end, they looked long and fresh -- which is an upgrade for me.
Got it? Well, after you process everything, here's what you need to know about using this technique.
Whether you're a makeup artist or just lucky, there's no way you're going to get this perfectly right the first time -- or maybe even never. But, if you're afraid of getting more mascara on your lid than your lashes take note. Move at a slow pace, and use your unoccupied hand to hold your lid while your working hand moves the wand against your lashes.
2. Use your favorite mascara, not just any old formula.
When I employ this trick, I use Benefit They're Real! Mascara because that's the one I use almost every day. It might be even better to use a waterproof formula, because you don't want a huge mess in the summer time.
3. This doesn't have to be a daily technique.
I admit, when I'm in a rush I just swipe on mascara the way we all know and love -- but when I want my eyes to have an extra pop, I definitely use this crucial tip. However, HuffPost Live makeup artist Kari Bauce told me that it shouldn't revolutionize the way you apply this makeup basic, as it's best used when you want to eliminate eyeshadow residue from your lashes.
