We all have goals we want to achieve, dreams we hope to reach and adventures we pray pan out. Why do some people (seemingly effortlessly) constantly attain their visions, while others fall short? The high achievers all have one thing in common: Following through.

Following through is a skill. But, it's not a skill you either have or you don't. You can master the skill of follow through simply by changing your subconscious habits.

It doesn't matter if you perpetually quit on projects halfway through or if you have one specific issue you seem to start, but never quite finish. Mastering the skill of following through is much easier than you think.

Creating a new habit to override a negative one is simple once you have the right tools. Habits are stored in the subconscious mind, so the first step is to go straight to the source.

The subconscious mind is very lazy. It likes to stick to already established habits (even if they are negative) and stay stuck until it's forced to changed. Changing the subconscious can be achieved through visualization, affirmations, meditation, or (my favorite) self-hypnosis which combines visualization, affirmations and meditation into one simple process.

1. Visualize: Close your eyes and see, imagine, feel or think (whichever is most comfortable for you) yourself reaching the finish line, losing the weight or running that successful business. Bask in the feelings of success.

2. Affirmations: Pick a positive sentence that feels natural to you. For instance, if you were trying to eliminate emotional eating once and for all, a great affirmation would be, "I only eat when I'm truly hungry. I follow through with all of my goals." Repeat the positive sentence 3 times a day, 21 times each time.

3. Meditation: Pick a word that represents your success. Sit quietly and simply focus on that specific word. When you notice other thoughts coming into your mind, acknowledge them with a smile and refocus back on that word of success.

4. Self-Hypnosis: Sit quietly and set a timer for 15 minutes. Visualize each part of your body relaxing, from the top of your head, all the way down to the tips of your toes. When your body is relaxed, count down from 10 to 1 slowly, focusing on relaxing deeper. Then visualize yourself successfully following through with your goals. When you feel satisfied, repeat your positive affirmation or word that represents your success, while continuing to focus on your goal. When the timer goes off, count from 1 to 3 and open your eyes.
