Matt Damon, star of the upcoming movie “The Great Wall,” isn’t really “a believer in walls.” Specifically, walls proposed by President Donald Trump.
In a new interview with People, Damon spoke out about the president’s plan to erect a wall between the United States and Mexico, as well as Trump’s idea that Mexico will pay for it.
“I believe that history belongs to the cooperators,” the actor said, before noting that he doesn’t think “Mexico is going to pay for our infrastructure any more than we’re going to pay for their highways, you know what I mean? That’s just not going to happen. But, that’s where we are and we’ll see how it all plays out.”
Damon continued, “Hopefully the people of Mexico understand that the people of our country, the majority of them, don’t believe that we should be putting any walls up.”
When Trump was campaigning for the presidency, Damon expressed his discontent over the possibility of seeing the former “Apprentice” host in the White House.
“I’m kind of amazed we’ve arrived at this point,” he said during a 2016 interview with ABC News’ “Popcorn with Peter Travers. “I’m concerned.”
“There’s no way we can let this guy be the [president],” he added. “To let that dude have the nuclear football, are you kidding me? That’s dangerous. He’s impulsive and rash, and doesn’t seem to think deeply about too many things.”
Following Trump’s election, however, Damon, took on a more diplomatic tone. The actor, who has openly admitted he didn’t vote for the Republican candidate, told NBC, “A successful American president is good for all of us and we really have to be rooting for him right now.”
